BU students benefit from COM’s national reputation as one of the very top U.S. colleges for the most popular communication disciplines: advertising, public relations, film and television, journalism, media science, and more. It’s a reputation built over decades, starting with the first communication courses offered at Boston University more than 100 years ago, to the creation of the country’s first degree program in public relations in 1947, to the launch of our emerging media studies program in 2015.
Today, COM offers a robust range of graduate-level degree programs: Advertising, Emerging Media Studies, Film and TV Studies, Journalism, Mass Communication (Media Science), Marketing Communication Research, Media Ventures, Public Relations, Screenwriting, and Television (with concentrations in Producing/Management or Producing/Writing).
No matter the program, students apply what they learn in class with hands-on experience right away. AdLab and PRLab, our student-run agencies, provide opportunities for advertising and public relations students to create campaigns for real clients. Aspiring journalists report for regional news outlets through our BU News Service. Film and television students write, as well as produce their own television shows. Those in the Media Ventures program develop a business idea and pitch it to leading industry executives. Emerging Media students conduct research for government agencies, nonprofits and businesses in and around Boston. Students in every graduate program take advantage of COM’s reputation and professional network to land fellowships, internships and first jobs.
